ISLAND UMBRELLA

island umbrella advantages

Santorini CantileverWhy are offset patio umbrellas so rich in functionality, flexibility, reach, and design?
Plenty of poolside and patio umbrellas require placement in the center hole of a table to keep the umbrella from tipping over. Unfortunately, such placement leaves at least one person under the umbrella partially or fully exposed to the sun.

Offset patio umbrellas—also known as cantilever umbrellas—rank high in flexibility of design because they do not have a center pole. Instead, they have either a side post or a side-hanging mechanism. Offset umbrellas are very sturdy, with some styles featuring vents that let wind and heat escape. These vents not only provide increased stability, but additional comfort as well.

A sturdy base is used to support an offset umbrella. Most freestanding bases require cement paver stones to weigh them down. The rule of thumb is to use four paver stones weighing a minimum of 50 pounds each to anchor a freestanding base. Offset umbrellas larger than 10' will require more weight to keep them anchored.

The key benefit of offset umbrellas is that they can cover larger areas that a regular umbrella cannot reach, including large outdoor seating areas, spas & hot tubs, pools, children's pools, and sandboxes.

For example, a 9-foot round umbrella is just right for placement over a spa or hot tub, while a square design measuring 10' x 10' will properly shade a seating area. There are rectangular umbrella styles ranging from 6' x 10' that serve well over a rectangular or oval patio table, or as large as 10' x 13' that also can be used as awnings near a home. These larger umbrellas keep indoor temperatures down as well, saving on utility bills.

Another beautiful option in offset umbrellas is a valance style made of acrylic fabric—the sturdiest fabric available for umbrellas. Tilting options on the valances make it easy to keep the shade right where it's desired as the sun moves throughout the day.

Ensuring everyone stays shaded and comfortable is best accomplished with an offset or cantilever umbrella, where the pole is off to the side—not in the center where it takes up precious space in the shade. As seen in The Island Umbrella™ collection, offered by Blue Wave®, an offset umbrella allows complete shade no matter the time of day. Having the pole at the side of the patio umbrella instead of in the center also accommodates any type of table desired—with a center hole or without.

Or why not omit the table altogether and simply place a gathering of chairs under the Island Umbrella for comfortable relaxation all day long?

Lovely Blue Wave Island Umbrellas deliver a unique shading system with high style and appeal for convenient placement poolside, on the patio, the deck—even the lawn— to protect guests and family from sunshine and cloudbursts whenever desired.
